Marking the 100th year anniversary of the first clinical description of sickle cell disease by Dr. James Herrick, the Toronto Sickle Cell Disease Conference 2010 was organized with the goal of improving the care of patients in the Greater Toronto Area. Our aim is to provide a refresher to healthcare workers regarding the management of sickle cell disease, and to facilitate interaction with patients and their family members outside the context of a hospital visit.
This conference is organized to meet the needs of the following groups.
  • Physicians
  • Psychologists
  • Nurses
  • Genetic Counselors
  • Allied Health workers including Social Workers, Dieticians, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists among others
  • Teacher/Educators
  • Community-based organizations
  • Patient Support Groups
  • Patients and their family members

Mission
To improve the quality of life and optimize the medical care of patients with sickle cell disease living within the Greater Toronto Area

Goals:

  • To review the current standards of care and practice guidelines for patients with sickle cell disease.
  • To provide conference attendees with tools to take back to their home institution to assist with standardization of care
  • To foster greater dialogue between patients with sickle cell disease, their families, cargivers and the health care team
